Ajuy's central public elememtary school is Alejo Posadas Elementary School (APMES) in honor of the lot's donor. The town has many churches namely Ajuy Baptist Church, Ajuy Evalengical Church, Church of the Nazarene, Bible Baptist Church, Roman Catholic Church, Aglipayan Church, Iglesia ni Cristo and Seventh Day Adventist.

The present municipality of Ajuy started as a small settlement established by the early Malayan freedom seekers on the north side of the Gubaton River near the present site of Barangay Lanjagan. The natives originally called it "Asui"

A popular story of how Ajuy got its name is as follows; "During the Spanish era, a spaniard who was assigned to list the names of coastal villages of this portion of Iloilo, came to this place where he met a native who was gathering wood. The stranger asked for the name of the settlement. The native, who did not understand Spanish, thought he was asked what he was gathering; and so answered, "Kahoy". And so the spaniard noted down the word Ajoy which was later changed to Ajuy, the present official name of this town."

At quick glance, Guimaras resembles any other developing province with modern houses and cemented roads. The wonder resides though at the coastlines. (Click here for more info)

I've been to this place three times already, and I reccommend this place ... especially because its just a tricycle ride away from the famous Alubihod Bay.

Iloilo - Heart of the Philippines

Iloilo is a province of the Philippines located in the Western Visayas region. Its capital is Iloilo City and is located at the southeast portion of Panay island, bordering Antique to the west and Capiz to the north. Just off Iloilo's southeast coast is the island-province of Guimaras and across Panay Gulf and Guimaras Strait is Negros Occidental.

Located 238 statute miles from Manila, Iloilo is the gateway of the Western Visayas Region. The province comprises the southeastern part of Panay Island. Iloilo is 55 minutes by plane from Manila. Should you opt to go by sea, Sulpicio Lines, Negros Navigation and Aboitiz have ships plying from Manila (19 hours).

Natural boundaries, such as mountain ranges with peaks as high as 7,000 ft., lie between Iloilo and Antique on the west and Capiz on the north. Mainland Iloilo is composed of plain interspersed with upland portions. The capital, Iloilo City, rests between the Iloilo and Batino rivers which from the angle of a nose. This location is the root of the province's old name, ilong-ilong which means "noselike".

Iloilo province, and its beautiful city, ranks as one of the country's foremost centers of culture, industry and trade. Located on the southwestern tip of Panay Island between the Iloilo River and the Guimara Strait, its attributes as the repository of architectural and artistic legacies, as the promising point of progress in aquaculture, and as a trove of unexplored tourist attractions give it an allure so bewitching as not to be missed.

Iloilo is the cradle of early Philippine civilization. The telltale marks of such cultural influences live on in the century-old houses, the period churches, the colorful festivals, and in the enterprising bloodline of its people. Iloilo has a glorious past as the land's great sugarbowl and the locale of the haciendas of the old rich - whose scions and daughters turned down the centuries into the dons and donas of powerful economic dynasties.

Some of the testimonies to this awesome heritage are the churches. Nowhere else can church tours prove so rewarding. The Miag-ao Fortress Church is a grand example of a medieval bastion church with onrnate floral designs on the facade; another colossal monument is the San Joaquin Church and cemetery known for its bas relief featuring the Castilian and Moorish wars, while its cemetery is picturesque for its hexagonal chapel with rose windows and twin-tiered balustrades that lead to its entrance; meanwhile, three staircases lead to the historic rock; whereas the Rennaissance - inspired Molo Church and orphanage, the Asilo de Molo, are unique for their architecture as well as for a rare product, hand-embroidered barong Pilipino in pina cloth; the Pavia Church is a red brick and coral windows cases and rightfully deserves a place in one's travelogue. These churches are no farther than two hours' distance from each other.

Iloilo province is primarily the commercial and trade center of Western Visayas, with commercial, industrial development and rural banks, financial and investment houses, insurance companies, and realestate agencies and developers. Nevertheless, agriculture is the province's main source of livelihood. In fact, Iloilo's production of rice, sugar and mango has made it one of the country's top agricultural producers.

The city's population represents a big manpower pool and a growing consumer market. Purchasing power is generally high given the favorable income distribution in Iloilo. Assuring the business sector of a steady supply of multi-skilled manpower are the city's 30 tertiary schools and 6 universities.

Iloilo's is a byword for its famous festival - the Dinagyang, a local mardigras. Held every January in honor of the Infant Jesus, the festival is a major tourist attraction.

Another even Iloilo is known for is the Paraw Regatta. Which is participated in by local and foreign sportsmen.

    Major Infrastructure Projects in Iloilo

A List of Major Infrastructure Projects in Iloilo

New Iloilo Airport Development Project (P6.2B)
    Proposed Completion - October 2006

The new Iloilo Airport, located 19 kilometers north of Iloilo City, will be a domestic trunkline airport of international standards located at the Sta. Barbara-Cabatuan site and will replace the existing airport in Manduriao. Its development project will cover the acquisition of 200 hectares of land. Panay Railways (P32B)

    http://iloiloonline.blogspot.com/20...em-planned.html

    Iloilo Flood Control Project (P4B)

Project involves the improvement works for Tigum and Agana Rivers in the upstream of the diversion works, heightening of the river bank along the Iloilo river and the drainage improvement along Ingore and Bo. Obrero creeks in Iloilo City.

Jalandoni Bridge and its Related Components Project (P272-million)

The construction of the 170-meter bridge started in 2003. It is part of the P272-million Jalandoni Bridge and its Related Components Project, an integral part of the Iloilo River Rehabilitation Project under the President’s Bridge Program of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

The President, assisted by city and local officials, is scheduled to lead the unveiling of the marker and ceremonial drive through shortly upon her arrival here Thursday morning.

Aside from Phase I, other scopes of the component project include the P95-million bridge approaches and access road leading to Hechanova Street that is due for completion also this year.

Other segments are the P60-million access road to Diversion Road and Boulevard, P32-million Dungon Bridge, and the P30-million flyover along General Luna Street.

Mixed-use Covention Center and Commercial and Gov't Office building
    (P500M)

Tupas proposed the construction of a convention center and commercial and government office building in two year's time.

"One of the handicaps of Iloilo in promoting itself as a convention center is the unavailability of a facility that could accommodate 3,000 delegates.

Tupas said this would enhance the competitiveness of Iloilo in its bid to become the next investment center in the country.

Mejorada said the center would be as big as the new Capitol building with commercial and government agencies as tenants.

The building's design will blend with that of the new Provincial Capitol.

    IT Park in Magsaysay Village

    Quote:

As you all know, there is a boom in the call center industry, which has the potential to employ thousands of young professionals, and Iloilo is one of the areas that is high on the list for operators as a location.

With this in mind, we might as well provide the infrastructure that is IT-ready to attract these investors and persuade them to locate in Iloilo. Other LGUs such as Leyte have already put up a similar project, and the returns are high. This way, the province can generate more revenues and help bring employment for our college graduates.

    Metro Iloilo

Metropolitan Iloilo includes Iloilo City, as core city and the municipalities of Leganes, Oton, Pavia, and San Miguel. It has a land area of 263.15sq.km. which is bounded by the Municipality of Zarraga in the north, New Lucena in the northwest, Santa Barbara in the west, Leon in the southwest, Tigbauan in the south and the Guimaras strait in the east. It has a total population of 510,230 as of year 2000 (Table 28). Iloilo City accounts for about 72 percent of the total population while the remaining portion comes from Oton (13%), Pavia (6%), Leganes (5%) and San Miguel (4%). In contrast, Metro Iloilo registered a total population of 454,419 in 1995. If the population will grow steadily at the rate of 2.34, the estimated population by 2013 is 689,559.

In 1996, the concept was revived. This time, mayors of the four concerned local government units, namely Iloilo City, Oton, Pavia and Leganes met to identify areas of possible cooperation. These three municipalities and the city of Iloilo are the areas identified to constitute Metropolitan Iloilo. With the help of the private sector, a draft memorandum of agreement was prepared for the creation of the Metropolitan Iloilo Development Council (MIDC) to undertake activities under certain identified areas. For this cooperative undertaking to be legally binding, it has to comply with the requirements of the Local Government Code of 1991 which stipulates that a resolution has to be passed by the respective Sanggunian signifying its concurrence to such agreement. All Sangguniang Bayan of the three concerned municipalities favorably passed a resolution signifying their concurrence except that of the Sangguniang Panglungsod of Iloilo City which to date refuses to concur with the metropolitan arrangement.

House Bill 1355 creating the Metropolitan Iloilo Development Authority (MIDA) was passed in Congress. Olongapo’s strong political leadership helped the city rise out its economic slump and transformed into a model world-class urban center.

Institutionalized partnership moves ountain. Because the partnership in Iloilo was institutionalized, it evolved into an organizational structure with support staff, office space, and sustainable funding. The Executive Council composed of the five mayors is supported by an Advisory Board, a Secretariat, and Project Steering Committees. The Secretariat holds office in the city hall and staff are paid plantilla salaries. Funds come from commitments of council members: Iloilo City shouldered PhP100,000 for the first year and PhP200,000 for the second year; the partner municipalities shared half of the city’s counterpart funds. Support for capability building from the Canadian Urban Institute is also assured until 2006. With these resources, the council was able to flexibly respond to development needs. On the other hand, the Metro Cebu Development Council was created by the Regional Development Council in 1997. Without a support staff, the Governor of Cebu, who acts as Interim Chairman of the Council, relies on the NEDA Regional Office VII as Interim Secretariat. To give the council legal and institutional powers and resources similar to that enjoyed by the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA), Cebu has proposed a bill to create a Metro Cebu Development Authority (MCDA). This bill is pending in both the Congress and Senate. Common vision and grounds unite. An MIDC Operations Manual has laid down the ‘practical’ guidelines’ on how Ilonggos can achieve a common vision. All council members pursue a common and integrated development plan. The plan defines priorities and areas of partnership which they themselves agreed upon. Further, a framework directs them toward complementary areas of growth. Hence, the council is a partnership of equals, respecting each city’s strengths and contributions. Partnership is forged, not forced. Appreciation, readiness, and capability to manage a metropolitan agreement did not come overnight to Metro Iloilo. An international partner—the Canadian Urban Institute—began building this conducive environment starting in 1998. It funded capabilitybuilding activities, sponsored meetings, workshops, and study tours here and abroad, which impinged on local officials the importance of an interlocal partnership. Aware of the benefits of membership, all the LGUs voluntarily joined the council. International partners mobilize. International partners have been tapped to fund or cosponsor infrastructure projects. Metro Iloilo’s priority projects to improve the road and flood control systems for 2004 to 2014 are funded by the Japanese government.

    Balaan Bukid

The province’s landmark, Balaan Bukid or Ave Maria Purisima Shrine on top of the mountain of the capital town Jordan, is a pilgrimage site of Catholic devotees specially during Holy Week. On top of the mountain is a large cross and a chapel. It offers a scenic view of Iloilo City across Guimaras Strait.

On regular days, Balaan Bukid can be accesses through a 15-min boat trip from Ortiz Port (Otriz St., Iloilo City) going to Jordan Port (Jordan, Guimaras). There you can consult the 'Department of Tourism Outpost' and request the tourism personnel to help you find a tricycle for the 15minute trip to the "foot" of Balaan Bukid.

    San Jose Church

Location: Bounded by Sto. Rosario, Zamora and de la Rama Sts.

The first church in Iloilo was built by the Jesuits around 1607 to serve the needs of the military stationed in Punta, as Iloilo was then called. However, on 29 April 1617, the Augustinians established San José, a house of the order. During World War II, the church was saved from being bombed by the Americans after they received information that Japanese were not holed in the church as they were previously informed. Between 1980-82 the church was renovated, a new marble floor was laid, under the direction of poet-writer, Fr. Gilbert Centina. San José is one of the few parish in the Philippines still under the Augustinians.

The church interior has an arcade of Corinthian columns supporting a faux barrel vault over the nave and groin vaults over the aisle. The main altar has some Gothic touches. A precious treasure of the church is an image of the Nuestra Señora del Rosario discovered by Diego Quiñones during the Dutch siege of Iloilo on 29 September 1614.
